Security Infrastructure

Security at Garanti BBVA can be divided into two main headings: Security of the infrastructure and the security of the data traffic.

Security of the infrastructure

To ensure the security of the hardware, software and the network infrastructure that we use, we employ network products that have been tested for security under various conditions.

Security of the data traffic

The security of the network traffic established during your use of our services consists of 4 main components:

  • Authentication
  • Authorization
  • Non-Repudiation
  • Data Protection

The first two of these four components are essential in enabling our authorized customers to perform transactions. For this, Internet/Mobile Banking users must go through various security steps before logging on to Internet Banking.

Customer Number: is the unique user-specific number that you are given upon becoming a Garanti BBVA customer.

Password: is the security code that you define on your first Internet Banking login. It consists of 6-8 numbers and letters.

Security Picture: is the image that you have previously selected and appears on the screen after you enter your password. On the same screen, the date and the time of your last Internet/Mobile Banking login are also displayed. To have protection against fraud, you must first check to ensure the accuracy of this information before entering your PIN. 

User Code: The user code is the Individual Customer Number given to the user by the bank. To perform transactions on Internet Banking, you must enter these four parameters (five for corporate users) correctly.

The third component, non-repudiation, is ensured through the agreement signed between you and the bank at the time of the application.
For the fourth component which is data protection, the SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) protocol is used. SSL ensures the confidentiality and the integrity of the traffic between two parties through encryption.

Features of the SSL protocol:

  • The SSL protocol is a protocol supported by all major web and wap servers and browsers.
  • SSL ensures that the data sent can only be decrypted at the right address.
  • Before being sent, the data is encrypted and can only be decrypted by the intended recipient.
  • Through verification on both sides, the confidentiality and the integrity of the transaction and the data are ensured.
  • The strength of the encryption method employed in data transmission depends on the length of encryption key that is used. Key length is extremely important in data protection. In the SSL protocol, 40-bit and 128-bit encryption is used. In 128-bit encryption, there are 2128 different keys thus breaking the encryption is unfeasible in terms of time and cost.
